MY ASHEN HEART

Believe it or not, this is the first year of my life that I have cared enough to figure this whole “lent” thing out. Growing up I had many friends who participated in Lent and would tell me how lucky I am that I didn’t have to give anything up. That attitude stuck with me through my childhood. “I’m lucky.”

What I didn’t realize then is how lucky…no…blessed I truly am, not because I don’t “have to” give something up, but because of what was given for me. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’. God gave His son for ME! To save ME! Jesus died on that cross and rose again for ME!

A month back, I mentioned to one of my co-workers, who does partake in Lent that I really don’t know all that much about it other than it is the season leading up to Easter. I didn’t know the purposes of the ashes and not eating meat and other rituals that go along with it. He gave me a non-denominational 40 day journey journal, which he said should help me in my quest for information.

I had already decided that I would be giving something up this year, not out of duty, or because my church tells me that I have to, but out of admiration and adoration for the One who was, is and always will be. Then yesterday I read my Pastor’s blog and oddly enough, he addressed this very thing. Why do we not partake in Lent? He answered this question eloquently and intelligently as always, but then he included a letter from one of our community group leaders suggesting that during this season, we should all fast something, whether it be food, TV, our own attitude; basically we should fast what is keeping us from having a closer relationship with our Creator.

BINGO! Once again, God plants a seed in my mind which is later confirmed by the masses. I love that this year I made a decision and now my church as a whole is making the same decision. To me, it is not about a ritual, a tradition, or being told, “you must do this.” To me, it is like anything else having to do with your personal relationship with Christ, it is a decision of the heart between me and my Lord.

So, while I will be choosing to delete something from my life, and to add more God time, you will not see me scrambling to get in line at Long John Silvers on Friday’s, nor will you see an ashen cross on my forehead today. That ashen cross resides in my heart and has a permanent place there. I will seek restoration, repentance and healing during not only this season, but for every season of my life.

SPENSER'S DRAWING

My 8 year old Spenser asked me for a peice of paper to draw on while visiting Grandma and Grandpa a few days ago. He grabbed an old marker and excitedly skipped off into the dining room. When he reappeared, he handed me a peice of paper. On the front it read, "To Mom, From Spenser: See God's promas (promise) on the back." When I flipped over the paper, this is what I saw:

To me, this is the most beautiful picture my child has ever created. I didn't ask him to draw it, I hadn't been talking to him about anything in particular at that moment, because I was spending time with my dad. But in all of his sweet innocence, he drew me the most beautiful image I could ever imagine. The day Jesus sets His kingdom on earth. :-) What a sweet blessing and complete joy I have in my Spenser.

MY HUSBAND ON THE CAVS JUMBOTRON

Last night, we were blessed with an awesome outing to the Cavs game with our church. While standing in line for the kids to get color hairspray we noticed the table for face painting right next to us. I immediately saw all of the orange face paint and casually said to my husband, "You should get your head painted like a basketball." :NO!" He said firmly. "Aaawwwww come on, it would be funny," I prodded. "NO, I don't think so." (Way to stand your ground, honey) "I dare you," came a voice we didn't even know from the man standing behind us in line. We all chuckled and Seto still said, "nnoooooooo." (He was smiling the whole time. I knew he just needed a little push) So my friend Kim said, "I triple dog dare you!" Oh it was ON then, I could see the look in his eyes.

So, we left Seto and my son Jesse to stand in line, while we took the little ones down to the court to be "courtside kids" and as we sat down we heard, "I'm here with Seto" coming from the jumbotron and when we looked up, this is what we saw...

...and as far as I know, it is still there. He went to work that way! :-)

MY EXCITING NEWS

Meet the newest member of our family. Her name is Phoebe (which means "light") and she has been such a blessing to us. She truly is a gift from God. She is such a little Princess (and she knows it). She's so well behaved, fully trained and just so full of love. This is a big step for us, because Spenser has had allergies to dogs since he was 4. He has been doing so much better and has been begging us for a dog. God knew we couldn't justify the expense of a good breed short haired dog, nor do we have time to train a puppy. So He sent us this sweet demeanored short haired dog, who is a year old, needs no training and just wanted to be put into a good home where a family would love her. She didn't cost us anything! Her previous owner was just unable to care for her anymore due to circumstances beyond her control. I prayed about her the day I found out she needed a home and God heard my prayer and answered it specifically. Now, we truly are the Brady Bunch. :-)

HE HEMS ME IN

Psalm 139:5 speaks 4 of the most beautiful words that may go unrecognized as you read, because they flow so beautifully into other words, as do all of the Psalms. Those four beautiful words are, "He hems me in." Think about those words for a moment. Think about the magnitude of those 4 simple words. He hems me in. He is before me and after me. It just gives me this warm fuzzy feeling. He thinks so much of me, that he stitches Himself around me so that I am like the poly-fill in a pillow, safely protected by the fabric hemmed around it. Protected from the dirt of the world. He hems me in. If we simply put Christ before us and after us in everything we do, how can we possibly do wrong?
If before each decision we make, or every thing we act on we say a prayer for strength, for wisdom, for grace, for whatever we may need right that moment and then offer a prayer of thanks for His faithfullness after...even if you didn't see the results you wanted, you saw the results He intended for you. He knows whats best for you and He hems you in. Are you embracing that? Are you allowing Him to hem you in? Are you including Him in everything you do, or are you picking and choosing the areas to be stitched up in?

Just a thought. :-)

It's my prayer that each of you will feel the warmth of God's "fabric" wrapped around you as He hems you in.

OBEDient

I cannot even tell you how many times I have read and heard about the book of Ruth. But never once did I ever allow the true message to actually sink in...until God told me to read it again and walked me through it like I was 2. (Which I need sometimes)

If you are very familiar with the book, then you probably know what I mean, but if you aren't, then please stop reading this and go read Ruth right now, then come back to this...go ahead...we'll wait for you.

Tragedy, pain, bitterness, being forsaken, losing favor with God, feeling alone. Yes, this is what Naomi felt as she made her way back home to her people and for whatever reason Ruth followed her.

Did Ruth know why she felt so loyal to Naomi? Did she have any idea who this God she was about to follow even was? Did she question her obedience at all, or did she just "know" she needed to be there?

Praise God for faithful servants as Naomi and Ruth and praise God for those providers He has placed on earth as Boaz. Do you realize how much had to take place in order for these 3 people to come together? If not for the tragedy she faced, Naomi would have stayed in Moab. If not for her loyal heart, Ruth would not have followed. If not for the generosity and Godliness of Boaz, he would have turned away.

If none of these things had happened, do you realize that the line of our savior Jesus Christ would have been broken???

Sure, God could have implanted the seed in anyone, but He always has a plan. He knew before Boaz was even born that he and Ruth would conceive Obed, who would in turn father Jesse, who fathered David, and we all know the story from there.

WOW!!! INTENSE WAKE UP CALL! This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful messages I have read.

If you are reading this right now and you are an avid student of the Word, then you are probably having a good chuckle over me JUST coming to this, but perhaps it has never sank in with you either and you as I did, need this wake up call.

Do you get the severity of this? Naomi thought her line was done. She lost her husband and her only two sons. She even told her daughters in law to GO HOME, she said that she would never have anything to offer them, but Ruth followed Naomi, not because she thought she could remarry and give birth to the future grandfather to the nth of Jesus!! They had NO CLUE! And Boaz? Sheesh, he was just going about his business, doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord and BAM! Along comes this property with a woman who would be his wife and he even said, Noooowwwwww wait just a second, TECHNICALLY I am not who you should be offering this deal to, let me check with my OTHER kinsman. But that man was not who God had chosen to father Obed.

So, when will you "give birth" to your Obed? And is it any coincidence that Obedient starts with Obed? Where in your life are you not being obedient to God? We never know where and how He is using us, but if we live each day as if we are going to be used by God to give birth to an Obed, then how much better would not only we, but this place we are stuck in until our Savior comes back be?!?!

Do you have any idea how much of an impact you COULD be making? This morning, after praying for a little girl in my 8 year old's class who has been 'not so nice' I told Spenser that we must show the love of Christ to people like this. I said to him, " You may not see a difference in her today or next week, or even at all, but how cool would it be to know that someday, when she is a mommy, she will remember the kindness that this little boy in the 3rd grade showed her even when she was not being nice, and what if she shares THAT love with her own children and it makes them great disciples of Christ? How great is THAT return on his investment in one person?

We never may know the ripple we cause, but we must always remember that through God we can move mountains and through our words, we can strike down or build up.

Is God calling you to give birth to your Obed today? Are you listening to Him, or challenging him on reasons why you cannot? Think of the impact Ruth made simply by following Naomi home. God's hand was in that from the beginning. His hand is also in your life RIGHT NOW. Even when you are in pain, alone, facing tragedy, feeling foresaken...HE IS THERE, just waiting for you to be OBEDient.

THE SPOON AND THE PEANUT BUTTER

I have a 40 oz jar of peanut butter being consumed by the spoonful. So does Nicholas. It's a habit. Not a bad habit by any means, but a habit nonetheless. When we are sad, stressed, anxious, etc. we reach for a spoon and a jar of peanut butter. It's our "comfort food" if you will.

"Is there anything else you think you may need for college?" I asked him the day before he moved, being the incessantly worried mom that I am.

"No, I'm good," he replied.

"Not even peanut butter?" He HAS to have peanut butter, I thought. Please say yes, so that I know you will have that little bit of comforting that I can't give you for the next year while you are gone.

"Oh wow. Yeah, I can't believe we forgot the peanut butter. I'm going to need something to get me through, ya know?" He tried hard to sound like it was not as big of a deal as it is.

So, off I went to the store to get him a SUPERSIZE jar and packed it away with a spoon.

Isn't it funny how a little thing like a jar of peanut butter can keep me connected to my child while he is off growing up at college? When we unpacked his things, he put the jar in a drawer, and as he closed it, he gave me one of "those" looks and had a smile that said everything. "Thanks mom," he seemed to say without speaking.

As I sit here spooning gobsfull into my mouth, I wonder if he is too. But the tears come anyway. They fall when I think about him, when I hear his voice, when I pray for him...and they come when I recall the last thing he said to me before I drove off yesterday and made my way back home. "I love you mommy. Thank you for everything. You have done so much for me. I wouldn't be here without you." Oh God, help me not bawl. Lord get me through this. How should I feel right now?

I wanted to grab him and throw him back into the Jeep and speed off back to home, where I could just put him in a bubble and spoon-feed peanut butter to him for the rest of his days. But, at 6'4" and about 200 pounds, I'm pretty sure that even my most awesome supermom skills couldn't conquer that mountain. Just tell him you love him and drive off.

"Aaaawwwww mom. Don't cry. I'll see you on Saturday." He says with tears welling in his own eyes.

Yes, I think to myself. That is why I was doing ok, until you said all that. I had been telling myself for the last 10 minutes, Don't cry, you'll see him Saturday. Everything will be fine, you'll see him Saturday.

I couldn't wait to just get home, and open my jar of peanut butter, grab a spoon, and be comforted. But, when I got home, I smelled his cologne he had put on just before we left, saw his empty room and I was suddenly like a crazy woman, running through the kitchen, throwing the cabinet door open, ripping the lid off the jar, and grabbing the biggest spoon I could find.*sigh* ok, I can do this. It's not like he is in a different country, or even a different state. I can go see him anytime I want to. Then I just dropped to my knees with my spoon still in hand and prayed for God to take over and fix anything and everything that I had messed up. He's my baby. My first born, my proto-type model. I know I haven't done everything right but I also know that by the grace of God, he turned out to be a good boy anyway. I have no worries with him. He makes good, sound moral decisions, gets good grades. He is very intelligent and he is going to be an attorney and have a phenominal life and make a difference and ...I need more peanut butter...anyone have a spoon?

START OVER

This came to me in an email today, in God's perfect timing. I pray that it will richly bless you today, because sometimes all it takes is a little reminder to work in big ways.

START OVER
When you've trusted God and walked his way,

When you've felt his hand lead you day by day,

But your steps now take you another way.....

Start Over

When you've made your plans and they've gone awry,

When you've tried your best and there's no more try,

When you've failed yourself and you don't know why......

Start Over

When you've told your friends what you plan to do,

When you've trusted them and they didn't come through;

And now you're all alone and it's up to you.....

Start Over

When you've failed your kids and they're grown and gone,

When you've done your best but it's turned out wrong,

And now your grandchildren have come along......

Start Over

When you've prayed to God so you'll know his will,

When you've prayed and prayed and you don't know still,

When you want to stop cause you've had your fill......

Start Over

When you think you're finished and want to quit,

When you've bottomed out in life's deepest pit,

When you've tried and tried to get out of it.....

Start Over
When the year has been long and successes are few,

When December comes and you're feeling blue,

God gives a January just for you....

Start Over

Starting over means "Victories Won";

Starting over means "A Race well run";

Starting over means "God's Will Be Done";

Don't just sit there......

START OVER.

BLESSED IS THE MAN TAKE 2

James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

I believe I have used this verse in a previous weekly read, but it happened to fall into my path today, and I just felt the need to share something on my heart. How awesome is this statement in James? Even when we are under severe stress, extreme duress, scared, feeling alone, in financial distress, hurting, worried...the Lord is ever faithful to us. He tells us we are blessed. We, those of us who sometimes cause the very problems we are facing...are blessed. All we have to do is hold onto our faith. Believe, know, trust that the Lord can and will bring you through this trying time in your life. He knows your heart. He knows what you need before you do. He has you cradled in His loving arms. "Hold fast," he tells us. "Perservere through this time and you will receive the crown of life; My promise to you."

Let me say this again...BLESSED is the man who perseveres under trial. Not cursed, BLESSED. Not downtrodden, BLESSED. Not hopeless, BLESSED.

I praise God for giving me this reminder today. I am reminded by this verse of Natalie Grants new song "I Will Not Be Moved." I will stumble and I will fall down, but Lord, I will not be moved from Your grace and Your glory. I will not give up on You, because You never give up on me, no matter how many times I fail you. I pray Lord that those who also need this reminder will be led to this page today, and I am humbled to be used as a vessel for your word today, Lord, and I thank you for the wonderful man who sent me this very message today.

God has already richly blessed you today and everyday. I pray that you can always see the blessings through the hardships.

IMITATION

3 John 1:11 "Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God."

We live in a hyper sensitive world. There is so much around us which can cause us to stray from what is important. To stray from the loving embrace of the Lord. To stray from our hearts. To stray from God's will for us. We constantly see negative images, people, situations. There are those who would love to pull us from the embrace, to snatch us from the mighty I AM. Do not do what they do, but rather show them how to be Christlike. Seek Him daily within the rubble of this world and know that if you face a situation which gives you that weird feeling in the pit of your stomach, it is most likely not from God. For God gave us every cell which makes us whole. He is responsible for having given us our body, soul, mind, and even emotions. That feeling you get is God speaking to you and telling you, "This is not of me, child. Do not walk into the evil ways of the world, but stand strong within my grasp." He will never leave you, never forsake, and has a full supply of love and grace for you always. How awesome is our God to never turn away from those who would turn on Him in a moment.
Father God, I pray that you will walk with each of us in our daily lives and when we are met with something which could turn us away from You, oh Lord, tighten your grip on us, and help us to see YOU in everything, and know how to turn from evil. In the name of your son and my savior, Jesus Christ, I pray for these your children. Amen.
In His mighty grip, ~Gina~

GOD'S PERFECT TIMING

In the perfect timing that only our Lord has, this "daily inspiration" came to me by email this morning from a Fish listener named Kevin. I thought it was something we all need to see. Please note that these are not my words, but the words of a listener.
God blesses his people. We receive great benefits by believing and having faith that He will provide for us. These benefits are to enrich our lives, and the enrichment becomes evident to those who live with the circle of our influence. So God blesses his people so that they may be a blessing. There will be roadblocks in our ways. The enemy does not want God's plan to succeed. Keep the faith and listen for God's voice and don't listen to the voice of the enemy or self. Increase your circle of influence with every opportunity that God gives to you.

"May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace" Numbers 6:26

A FATHER'S LOVE

A friend received this and passed it on to me. Especially with Father's Day coming, I thought it was something everyone should see. What a powerful testimony to our Lord. WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

A son asked his father, 'Dad, will you take part in a marathon with
me?'. The father who, despite having a heart condition, says 'Yes'.
They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on
to join other marathons, the father always saying 'Yes' to his son's
request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his
father, 'Dad, let's join the Ironman together.' To which, his father
said 'Yes' to.

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever.
The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86
kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike
ride, and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the
coast of the Big Island . Father and son went on to complete the race
together. View this race at.....

THE PROMISE OF SONshine

This morning I was pulling out of the parking lot after dropping Spenser off at school, and I was thinking how dark and cloudy it was, when all of the sudden, I saw the sun peaking through. It literally looked like an eye looking down through the clouds, then suddenly it was covered over again, and I slumped down in my seat with an "oh well" kind of attitude, and drove off. Then as I pulled into the parking lot at work I realized that when I wasn't looking, the sun had come back out and was filling the sky. I didn't notice, because I was disapointed that I couldn't see it anymore, and I stopped looking for it, so when it came back out, I missed its beauty and splendor until it was so broadly covering the sky that I couldn't miss it.

We live in a world which is filled with darkness. But, even when we cannot see the SON shining through it, He is there, watching, waiting, wanting us so badly to seek Him and not stop looking. We need to realize that when we don't feel the presence of the SON shining on us, it is US not looking, because He is faithfully there. If we cannot see Him shining through the darkness, it is because we stopped looking for Him.

Someday (hopefully soon) the SON will be shining throughout the earth, claiming His rightful seat on the throne and I pray that you have already seen the SON shining through the clouds by then. I pray that you won't miss the beauty and splendor of His reign. Don't let the darkness consume you, seek the SON shine in everything you do.

In the loving grip of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I leave you with this:

Revelation 1:7 Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. (how appropriate...as I close, Third Day, Call My Name is playing on the Fish, which is on their Cd REVELATION! There are NO coincidences, JUST GOD)

WHY I WALK

Below is a repost, but if you haven't seen it, please take the time to read it. I get asked why I walk for Breast Cancer so often and I just really want to say, "Isn't it obvious?" But with so many wonderful causes, I guess it isn't as obvious to some people as we think when we choose to support one thing over another. In addition to what I posted below, I would like to add a quote from Amy, who is one of our team walkers this year. Any recently told me, "I know these walks have been going on for years and THAT is why I have been able to get such good treatment for my cancer, it's why I am able to walk for breast cancer only a month after getting chemo myself." They were walking for Amy before she even heard the words, "You have breast cancer," at the young age of 23.
Amy is so appreciative of every dollar we collect, as is Natalie who is another survivor on my team. THEY are why we walk.

Why am I Making Strides Against Breast Cancer? I lost my cousin to breast cancer and my sister in law is a survivor, but my connection does not end there...

Imagine being a mere 22 years old and being told, "You have a suspicious lump in your breast." Though you try not to panic, the terror that immediately rips through you is overwhelming. You are sent to a specialist who does a needle biopsy, which is inconclusive and they schedule you for a mammogram. You can't sleep, your heart races every time you think about it. You wait very impatiently for your results and meanwhile...you find out you are pregnant. "But, I just had a mammogram...what about the baby?" So many questions race through your mind, but you are assured that the mammogram is very low dose and will not hurt your baby. Of course that doesn't settle your mind at all. All you can do is pray.
A few days later your doctor calls. You have what they call a ridge, which is NOT breast cancer, but can cover breast cancer.

I don't have to imagine this happening. It did happen...to me. I am so unbelievably thankful that I was not diagnosed with this horrific disease, but I realize that as with many others, my story could have turned out very different...and still could.

I am supposed to get regular mammograms just to make sure that nothing is growing underneath the ridge, since we cannot feel under it. However, insurance comapnies will not pay for a "just in case something might be there" mammogram until the age of 40.

There are so many people who hear the words, "you have breast cancer," and feel hopeless. But guess what...WE can be their hope. WE can provide funding for a better future in the world of Breast Cancer. WE can help researchers find a cure. WE can help fund programs which offer free mammograms for everyone, classes for those recently diagnosed, support for families, etc.

I am still not exempt. It could happen to me. It could happen to you, to your mother, sister, aunt, friend and yes, even to the important man in your life; anyone of us, at any time. Breast cancer has no mercy, and not one of us is safe from it.

Hearing stories of survivors grips at my heart, but seeing the children of those who lost their battle just touches me in a place that I never knew existed. I don't ever want my children to have to join the fight against breast cancer because they lost their mother, and I don't want that for any of you.

We all need to be PROACTIVE against this disease. Please join me in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, whether as a walkmate on my team, or as a sponsor. Remember, even if it is just a $5.00 donation, it is $5.00 more to advance research, educate, and support than the foundation had before. Every dollar counts to give hope, and hope starts with US. BLESSED IS THE MAN

James 1:12 "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him."
So many people in my life right now seem to be under trial. As a matter of fact, it seems like God's people are under severe attack right now. We MUST persevere. We MUST stand strong against evil temptations. Pray like you have never prayed before, and should you need inspiration through the toughest of times, read Job. Never forget the love Christ has for you, and how much He weeps for you when you are hurting. Cry out to Him in your time of need; stand strong and receive the crown of life. I pray that even when life seems to be going perfectly wonderful for you, that in those times you can still remember your brothers and sisters who struggle. God bless you always.

SING THE GLORY OF HIS NAME

Psalm 66:1-2 "Shout joyfully to God, all the earth; Sing the glory of His name."
Have you ever thought about how many of the songs you sing come directly from the Word of God? So many popular Christian songs are created around specific verses from scripture. When you sing your favorite songs, you are praising the Lord with a joyful noise, for you are shouting His Word! Worship everywhere and sing the glory of His name. Oh and please don't be concerned about how you might sound to others around you. Our Father does not make mistakes. He has made each of you perfect, and though some clearly hear pitch better than others, it is all beautiful music when you sing it in the name of Jesus Christ.

WEEKLY READ

James 1:12 "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."
Over the weekend, the Lord blessed me with testimony from his faithful servant Robert Rogers. I encourage you to read his story at http://www.mightyintheland.com ; although reading it, I am certain is nothing like hearing it. How impactful and powerful to see the strength of the Lord exude from this man. He challenges with the simple question, "Do you just know God, or do you know God?" and then he tells his story which one would think could turn even the strongest of faith away. But he stands strong in our Lord and Savior, and while I pray that none of you will ever have to face the trial which Mr. Rogers has, I pray for your strength in the Lord through your trials, both big and small. Never forget, there is nothing bigger than God. Through Him, you can handle and get through anything. May the testimony, strength and faith of Mr. Rogers inspire you to live a life with no regrets.

WEEKLY READ

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
I pray that you seek rest in Jesus and that you will know that your "yoke" does not have to be heavy and laden with burden and woe. Seek Him, rest in Him and He will free you from your self entombed bondage.
